How 3D Modelling Is Transforming Design and Innovation”

3D modelling is the process of creating a digital representation of an object in three-dimensional space. Using specialized software, designers build models made of points, edges, and surfaces that define shape and structure. It is widely used in engineering, animation, architecture, and product design because it allows objects to be visualized and tested before they are physically made.

Types of 3D Modelling

1. Solid Modelling

Represents objects with volume and mass. It is highly accurate and used in engineering and manufacturing.

2. Surface Modelling

Creates smooth, curved, and complex surfaces. Commonly used in automotive and product design.

3. Polygon (Mesh) Modelling

Objects are built using interconnected polygons. Used heavily in animation, gaming, and visual effects.

4. Digital Sculpting

Allows creation of detailed organic shapes using tools similar to clay sculpting.

5. Parametric Modelling

Models controlled by dimensions and rules. Any change updates the entire model automatically, useful in engineering

Popular 3D Modelling Software

  • Blender – modelling, animation, VFX

  • SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA – engineering and manufacturing

  • Fusion 360 – product design

  • Maya – film and animation

  • ZBrush – sculpting

  • SketchUp – architecture
